- 공항 확장 저지 기념: 올리비아 차우(Olivia Chow) 토론토 시장과 오스마 말릭(Ausma Malik) 부시장은 빌리 비숍 공항 확장을 막아낸 8만 7천여 명의 시민들에게 감사를 전하고자 개발자 기부금(Section 37)을 활용해 이 무료 탑승 정책을 도입했습니다.
현재 문제점 및 주의사항
- 극심한 혼잡과 새치기: 승객이 한꺼번에 몰리면서 대기 줄이 길어지고, 페리에 탑승하려는 사람들 사이에 몸싸움이 벌어지는 등 혼란이 빚어지고 있습니다.
- 가짜 티켓 사이트 주의: 토론토시는
toronto-ferryticket.com과 같은 허위 공식 사이트에서 사기성 티켓을 판매하고 있다며 주의를 당부했습니다. 정품 디지털 티켓은 반드시 공식 토론토시 페리 대시보드를 통해서만 구매해야 합니다.
향후 대책
선착장 정체 문제를 근본적으로 해결하기 위해 토론토시는 9,200만 달러를 투입해 대형 전기 페리 2대(Lady of the Quays, Toronto Islander)를 도입합니다. 이 친환경 페리들은 2026년 말과 2027년 초에 각각 운항을 시작하여 대기 시간을 크게 줄일 예정입니다.
