2024년 합격생을 보고 느낀 스티븐허 원장의 입시 전략

밀레니엄 세대와 Z 세대가 많아짐으로 2024년 미국 대학 입시가 높은 수준의 대학 합격률이 엄청 힘들어졌습니다.

그럼으로 인해 높은 내신, 높은 SAT/ACT 성적만으론 부족하게 되었습니다. 사실상 SAT/ACT 성적 보다는 AP나 IB 성적, 적게는 5개에서 많게는 10개까지의 AP/IB 성적이 입시에 필요하게 되었습니다. 이는 아무래도 많은 대학교들에게 SAT/ACT 성적이 아직도 필수가 아니기 때문입니다. 또한 올해는 다른 해들과 조금 다른 것이 합격권의 경계선이 명확하지 않았다는 점 입니다. 예전에는 명확하게 이 정도면 합격 가능한 대학들이 이런 학교들이고 이 정도로는 합격 불가능한 대학들이 명확했다면 올해는 그렇지 않았다는 겁니다. 올해는 놀랍게도 랭킹이 더 높은 대학교엔 합격 했지만 조금 더 낮은 수준의 대학교엔 불합격이 된 경우들이 있었습니다: 예를 들면 수강생 A군은 UC Berkeley 엔 합격 했지만 UCLA 는 보류 그리고 Michigan Ann Arbor 엔 불합격 되기도 하고 또 수강생 B양은 Columbia University 엔 합격 했지만 University of Pennsylvania 엔 불합격 또 다른 C군은 Johns Hopkins 엔 합격 했지만 University of Chicago 엔 불합격 되기도 했습니다. 이런 불균형적인 합격이 전반적으로 전부는 아니었지만 예전에는 보지 못 했던 상황이었습니다. 이런 현상은 올해 합격 현황에서 한 30% 의 학생들에게서 볼 수 있습니다. 펜데믹에 의한 경제적 어려움에 많은 공립 대학교들이 힘들어졌고 합격 조건이 까다로워 졌습니다 그로 인해UC Berkeley, UCLA, University of Michigan Ann Arbor, University of Virginia 등은 경쟁률이 높아졌고 비슷한 수준의 공립 대학교와 등록금이 비싼 사립 대학교의 경쟁률 또한 비슷한 정도였습니다. 저는 학교 기숙사 선정 또한 치열할 거로 예상합니다. 좋은 기숙사는 빠른 속도로 채워질 거로 예상되기에 될수록 빨리 기숙사 서류를 제출하는 게 좋을 듯 합니다. 모든 분들께 좋은 결과가 있기를 기원합니다!

US University Admissions Trends 2024
The high number of Millennial and now Generation Z applicants made the Fall 2024 admission cycle still difficult overall for acceptances into the top-most exclusive universities. So, just high grades/GPA and high SAT or ACT test scores weren't enough. In fact, SAT/ACT scores seemed, strangely, to matter less than AP or IB scores and having many AP/IB scores, like more than 5 AP/IB scores and having as many as almost 10 seemed to make a much bigger difference. This may be because almost all universities still made sending SAT/ACT scores optional. In fact, I didn't see any university that didn't allow SAT/ACT test scores to be optional. Also too, this year, different from other years, students' acceptances weren't as clear cut: In previous years, a student's university list would have a clear line in the middle, below which were all acceptances and above which were all denials. This year, there were surprising acceptances at highly ranked universities while lower ranked universities were denials: For example, one student was accepted to UC Berkeley but was waitlisted to UCLA, and denied to Michigan Ann Arbor. Another was accepted to Columbia University, but was denied to University of Pennsylvania, accepted to Johns Hopkins, but denied to University of Chicago. These uneven acceptances didn't happen across the board, but this had almost never happened in years before. It was surprisingly common this year, like in about 30% of student applicants. With the lingering effects of the bad economy during the Covid years, top public universities were very very difficult and selective in admissions, so UC Berkeley, UCLA, University of Michigan Ann Arbor, University of Virginia were extremely competitive, and the same for about equally ranked public universities to the more expensive private universities. I predict that dormitories will be very competitive too with the good dorms filling up very fast at these large and exclusive public universities. So, get your dormitory applications in quickly too!
